Spanish Class

Mrs. Poveda

¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español!
Welcome to Spanish class!

"I’m so excited about teaching Spanish.  I’m even more excited about seeing my students develop a love for speaking and understanding a new language. According to the U.S. government study, it will take the average person studying a foreign language in a school setting approximately seven years to become fluent in the language.  While that may seem like a long time, we are fortunate to have a program that will give our Sacred Heart students a jump start on those seven years of study.  Many of our children are even able to skip their first year of high school Spanish and jump right into the second year of study.  What a wonderful boon to their self-esteem!
"

6th grade – We’ve begun to learn a lot of vocabulary and already we are combining our words to make simple sentences.  Participation is a must in this class, or you’ll never learn to speak Spanish.  The day you receive new vocabulary words or phrases from me is the day you begin to study for your next vocabulary quiz (expect it about one to two weeks after you first learn the words).  Dedicate approximately five minutes per day to learning these words.  You’ll need to know how to spell them, too.

Lesson tests come about one time per month.

7th – We’re presently reviewing (quickly) everything we learned last year.  By January, we’ll be moving on to conjugating the verbs ser (to be) and ir (to go) and learning how to use them in sentences.  Conjugating verbs is a bit more complicated than in English, so you’ll enjoy the challenge.

8th – After our short review of the verbs ser and ir, which are both irregular verbs in Spanish, we’ll be moving on learning how to conjugate all other verbs (there are three types in Spanish – regular, irregular and stem-changing).  There will be a lot of oral practice along with a lot of new vocabulary.  This is the final step in preparing you for that “A” in high school Spanish.  You’ll be the best prepared students for your classes and will absorb so much more, since you’ll already know the basics.

Expectations for Spanish student:

*All students must maintain a notebook which will contain their vocabulary words and grammar they learn in class.

*All students are expected to participate.  Our Spanish curriculum focuses not only on reading and writing, but on speaking and understanding the language.

*All students will be expected to complete homework assignments (we only meet twice a week, so there will only be homework on those two days).  Homework will be posted on the SchoolNotes.com link.  Assignments will generally take 5-10 minutes to complete, assuming that students have taken good notes in class.  In addition, I strongly recommend that students spend 3-5 minutes a day reviewing vocabulary words.

*There will be regular vocabulary quizzes and a test on grammar at the completion of each lesson.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hasta luego y muchas gracias.
